People often dread approaching that big birthday, their 30th. For some, it means the end of their wild 20s and it’s time to grow up and settle down. It’s not all doom and gloom as many people would have you believe, there are some things you learn in your 30s that change your life forever! Here are just some of them.
You know who you are
You will have spent at least 30 years with yourself at this stage, and you’ll be coming to terms with exactly who you are and what you like. In your 20s you’re still trying to figure out who you are, testing the waters with many different things, but by your 30s, you know. That means you can focus all of your attention doing the things you love, not wasting time on the things you don’t.
It’s the same for your professional life too, you might have spent the majority of your 20s working jobs that don't suit you. Your 30s is the time to make sure you don’t spend the next 40 years working somewhere you hate, figure out what you love to do and do it.
Other people’s opinions matter less
By the time you reach your thirties, you know who your friends are, and who your friends aren’t. Friendship is no longer about quantity, it’s about spending quality time with those closest to you. In your 20s it was about getting out and meeting as many new people as possible, but in your 30s it’s about keeping the ones you love. The people who have been with you through your worst times are the ones to hang onto, and when you’ve experienced plenty of life, you’ll know who they are.
While you shouldn’t turn into the rudest person alive, you realize that the people who aren't in your life matter way less. You don’t have to wear clothes to fit in with people you don’t even know; your friends and family already love you for you, so just be yourself. It also becomes clear that no one really cares what you’re doing anyway, everyone is in their own little bubbles, so you learn to have more fun.
You understand the struggle
You’ve been living life for over 30 years, so you’re familiar with its struggles. Knowing how bad things can get, you learn to appreciate the good times in life, and it’s something you should celebrate. You learn to sit back and take a breather every now and then to really appreciate everything that’s going well for you in your life. One thing you learn to do after plenty of life experience is to let things go.
In your 30s you understand that stressing about something out of your control, or something you’ve done in the past, is pointless and you should just move on. There is no point dwelling on the actions of others or mistakes of your own, and you learn to pick yourself up, dust yourself off, and carry on.
Forget dreading your thirtieth birthday - this is where life really gets started! Especially when you learn so many valuable lessons.
